We play a new kind of trivia today based on a game called Mind the Gap. There's a newer version of the game with Gen Alpha, but the version I was using didn't have this new addition yet.

Please note: the StayAwakeWhileDriving website address I refer to in some episodes is no longer in use. Thank you.

It's another episode of Stay Awake While Driving. My name is Tara, and today we have a new trivia game. And it doesn't matter how old or young you are, I have questions for everyone. Almost everyone. But introductions tend to get very boring, and this is enough of this one, so let's just get started.

Five Word Challenge

SPEAKER_00

Let's begin with the five-word challenge today. The first word is hex head. H-E-X space H-E-A-D hex head. The second word is just a letter, the letter U. The third word is lag. Fourth word is carriage C A R I A G E carriage. And finally, countersunk. Countersunk C O U N T E R S U N K Countersunk. So we have hex head you lag carriage and countersunk. What do these words have in common? We'll get back to them by the end of the episode. How

Mind the Gap Trivia - introduction

SPEAKER_00

should I do this trivia today? Should I do it in the style of the regular trivia? No, I think we're gonna do it differently. I'll just explain a little bit more about this particular trivia. It is called Mind the Gap, a trivia game for the generations. It's a board game, kind of like trivial pursuit, but we're not gonna move the pieces. The questions are lumped together by generations. And the generations they've included are Boomer, Gen X, Millennial, and Gen Z. So where do you fit into that? Where I thought I fit into it, I don't know any of the answers to the questions. So if you don't know any of the answers to the questions in your generation either, that's okay. But if you do know them, then you're a lot smarter than me. You know, I like watching Jeopardy, but I feel so dumb after watching Jeopardy because I never know any of the answers. And this is kind of the same feeling I'm having after going through some of the questions in this mind the gap game. This game is by Solid Roots. It's an actual game. If you're interested in getting it, uh I've seen it online. I checked this out from my local library. But I thought, hey, let's do some questions, should we? Shall we? Just for fun? You get a point for everyone you happen to know. I think what I'm gonna do is I'm gonna take because just like Trivial Pursuit, there are different categories. I don't even know what these categories are. What are these little symbols? Uh okay, here we go.

Mind the Gap - play the game

So each card has a TV slash film category, pop culture, music, headlines, and then slang or slogans. I'm just gonna run through a card with all those categories for each generation, and we'll start with Boomers. This show hosted by Dick Clark ran for many years highlighting popular songs and dances. The show was American Bandstand. What cowboy character was used in tobacco advertisements from 1954 to 1999? The Marlborough Man. What country star made her mark in music with hits such as Crazy and I Fall to Pieces? Patsy Klein. What was the code name of the atomic bomb development program by US, British, and Canadian efforts? The Manhattan Project. And then what happened when someone bought the farm? What does that mean? That the person died if you bought the farm. Next, let's do a card for Gen X. On what show would you find kids Kimberly Drummond and Willis and Arnold Jackson? What you talking about, Willis? Different strokes. What large eighties portable music player was known for its very loud music? A boombox. What Ray Charles song was used as the theme for the TV show Designing Women? Georgia on my mind. In what classic Nike campaign did everyone from Michael Jordan to Bo Diddley appear? All referencing one of the greatest two sport pro athletes in history. Bo Jackson, Bo Nose. Okay, we're moving on to the millennial card. In the animated version of Aladdin, what did Aladdin steal which prompted the guards to begin chasing him? It was a loaf of bread. Just like its name, these vending machines offered movie rentals. Breadbox. This singer had a five-octave vocal range and a string of number one hits for eleven straight years from 1989 to 2000. Five octave vocal range. Mariah Carey. Name the two presidential candidates in the controversial 2000 election. We've had so many controversial elections, but this was George Bush and Al Gore. Which snack brand's slogan was Once you Pop, you can't stop, which referenced the sound their packaging made when you opened it. Pop the top of some Pringles, a Pringle canister. And then let us round out the game today with a Gen Z card. What actress was the new girl? Zoe Dashnelle. Name the gesture where a person dropped their head into the bent crook of a slanted upward angled arm. Can you picture that? When you drop your head into the bent crook of a slanted upwardly angled arm, that was called Dabbing. What was Korean pop music called? Why are they saying this like it's past tense? What was Korean pop music called? K-pop. In what country did 33 miners spend sixty-eight days trapped half a mile underground before they were pulled to safety? What country was that? Chile. Chilean miners. And what exactly was a one dier? One deer. That would be a fan of one direction. Whew, okay, we're gonna stop there for today. Do you feel smarter? Less smart? Exhausted? How many points did you get? We were equal opportunity here on Mind the Gap. We did a card from each generation. I think I forgot to mention that the five-word challenge, the challenge is to memorize the words. So we're gonna review the five words for the five-word challenge, and then you have to tell me what they are at the end of the episode. Today the words again are hex head, you, lag, carriage, and counter sunk. And for a bonus point, what do these words have in common? Ooh, sorry, my microphone just wobbled. Did you hear that?

Questions - What Tasks

SPEAKER_00

How about we do some questions that don't necessarily have right answers? Unlike trivia. Here's a good question. What tasks make you feel like your best self? What tasks it doesn't have to be chores, don't look at them as chores necessarily, just things that you do that make you feel like your best self. Put me on pause. Tell me what your answer is.

Which Tasks - my answer

SPEAKER_00

For me, what makes me feel like my best self? I don't know. I I hate oh, this is gonna sound so terrible. I have friends in nursing homes. I go visit them. I try to go once a week. It's very hard. I I have to psych myself up when I'm sitting in the parking lot to go in that building every time. But on the few days when we have a good visit, when those people you have to meet those people where they're at, I've discovered. And when a little sliver of them is still there and you have a kind of a nice conversation, I don't want to say conversation, but when you have a nice visit with that person and they're able to engage a little bit, then I feel better about the whole process. It's tough.

Last time you...

SPEAKER_00

When did you last cry? In front of another person or by yourself? Put me on pause. I

My Answer

SPEAKER_00

cry all the time. I cry at the drop of a hat. All the time. Actually, a couple days ago was as of this recording. Would have been my grandma's birthday. And she passed away this last year, and so that made me quite tearful for a couple days there thinking about thinking about her. But honestly, I do. I cry, I don't know, every other day, probably.

Describe Art

SPEAKER_00

Describe the most captivating painting or piece of artwork you've ever seen. Do you remember the emotions you felt when you saw it? Where did you see it in person? Or did you see an image of it online or in a book? This

My Answer (Quilting?)

SPEAKER_00

is a tough one for me, but I'm thinking that the most captivating artwork I have seen is are some of the quilts that I saw in a quilt museum in Paducah, Kentucky. And I think it was so captivating to me because I knew a little bit about quilting. My mother quilted quite a bit, but I didn't think of them. That sounds bad because her pieces were very beautiful and could be considered art too. But when you go to the quilt museum and see these incredible, and she admitted it too, she's like, this is nothing like the quilting I do. This is incredible. I think that just surprised me so much. And I realized this is artwork that that really those pieces really captivated me. I recommend it. The quilting museum in Paducah I can't say that. Paducah, Kentucky. There we go. And gentlemen will enjoy going there too. I have talked to a few gentlemen who have actually been quite surprised and um impressed with what they saw at the museum.

Five Word Reveal

SPEAKER_00

Here we are at the five-word reveal. Do you remember any of the five words today? Do you have any clue what they have in common with each other? Tell the words to me now if you would please. The word to get off dead center is hexhead. That's the first one. Hexhead. Remember the rest? U, lag, carriage, and countersunk. What do they have in common? They are all types of bolts. Hexhead bolt, U-bolt, lag bolt, carriage bolt, countersunk bolt, and variations thereof. So many bolts. If you said fasteners, I'll give that to you too. That's gonna do it for another episode of Stay Awake While Driving. Hopefully you are a little bit further down the road. Hooray! And next time, what shall we do? More mind the gap questions? Why not? There's tons of them. That'll get us very far down the road. Until you and I get a chance to do a little more trivia together, spend a little more time in the car together, drive carefully, and take care.
